Join us and embark on this magical trip to the desert during the Memorial Day weekend, in which we explore the gorgeous canyons of Utah and lounge under its star-littered skies. The desert skies preluding the summer season are full of surprises; they exhibit some of our most beloved constellations, such as Leo and the Ursas, while unveiling the full array of shooting stars before the eyes of their blessed beholders. When the sun rises, we shall witness Grand Staircase-Escalante and its truly spectacular landscape, from the windy and narrow canyons to the magnificent arches spanning across the vast desert of Utah. Did we mention that we are invited by the host for a nighttime showing at the drive-in? Remember to bring your favorite blanket and snacks – and perhaps someone romantic to you – for a classic and memorable movie night under the stars!
Day 1: We will meet at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center at 1pm on Friday to pack the van and get ready to hit the roads. We will drive roughly 450 miles (7-8 hours) with stops for dinner and gas. Upon arrival at the Shooting Star Drive-in, we will find our campsite, set the tents up, relax around the fire and get ready for a good night’s sleep.
Day 2: We start off Saturday morning early for a quick breakfast. The breakfast is followed by a brief visit at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center, where we acquire general information about the area. We will begin our adventure by exploring the Peek-a-boo, Spooky slot canyons, and the Brimstone Gulches (3.5 miles round trip). The hike is nice and easy, though the canyons become very narrow at certain points. After a quick bite of lunch, we will head over to the famous Calf Creek Falls and take to the lower trail (5.84 miles round trip). We will head back to the Shooting Star Drive-in before sunset, where we prepare for the dinner and a nighttime showing under the stars!
Day 3: We start off Sunday morning early for breakfast. We will begin our adventure at the Devil’s Garden, which features a 8.1 miles loop trail that traverse across 7 arches that attract tourists from the worldwide. We will come back to the Shooting Star Drive-in before sunset, where we prepare for the dinner and get ready for a night of stargazing and storytelling!
Day 4: We get to sleep in and get up late in Monday morning. We will eat breakfast, pack camp, and depart from Grand Staircase-Escalante by noon. We will stop by for dinner and gas before returning at the Rec Center at 10pm.
